‘The Correct Stuff’ is one of the most elegant adventure films ever made, a chronicle of unbelievable heroism, poignant romance, sharp drama, and substantial humor…and amazingly, it has actually happened in our lifetimes!
This is a sage of test pilots, ‘pushing the envelope’, proving the sound barrier couldn’t constrain mankind’s arrive for area. The entire world changes when the Russians open Sputnik, in 1957. As the American status program struggles to ‘catch up’, the government realizes that American men will have to go into state, and President Eisenhower wants test pilots to hold this role. Yeager is out (he never completed college), but Cooper and Grissom, and many others, compete for spots in the Fresh Frontier.
These pilots, from all services, are weeded down to seven men, dubbed ‘Astronauts’, and the Mercury Station Program is born! Along with Cooper and Grissom, the chronicle focuses on Navy pilot Alan Sheppard (Scott Glenn), laconic and prone to ethnic humor; and Marine John Glenn (perfectly cast Ed Harris), a ‘boy scout’ of unimpeachable morals, who loyally supports an impaired wife. Working under the glare of the world press, the seven gradually near to respect one another, and embark on an sage adventure, tubby of triumph and tragedy!
Meanwhile, Chuck Yeager, snubbed by NASA, continues to test original generations of jets, until, in a climactic scene, he achieves the threshold of location, himself. If you maintain the Age of Heroes is past, win ‘The Just Stuff’, and you might change your mind! This is a film to care for!
The fact that “The Just Stuff” lost the Oscar for best portray to “Terms Of Endearment” is beyond me; this movie should have won. The fact that it wasn’t a hit at the box office succor in 1983 is also beyond me. We are talking about what I contemplate it’s the best American legend in all the sense of the word.

It’s queer that a Venezuelan-born like me should talk about a movie like this, but I feel that “The Accurate Stuff” should have been a classic -well, it is for me. The sage of the “Mercury” astronauts is portrayed marvelously by Philip Kaufman’s direction, showcased beautifully by Caleb Deschanel’s stylish photography, and supported by an astounding cast including Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Barbara Hershey, Sam Shepard, Pamela Reed, Kim Stanley, and Veronica Cartwright.
In fact, I remember when I was watching that movie at home, and my unhurried father asked me if a man that appeared on the camouflage was astronaut John Glenn because he looked fair like him. Of course I told him he was an actor who was playing his role. That said, it’s astonishing to seek how Ed Harris is perfectly cast as Glenn.
And I don’t want to forget one of the reasons why I admire this movie, and that’s Bill Conti’s spectacular music collect. Of course it may sound a tiny like Holst’s “The Planets”, but I usually shout every time I listen to the main theme.
I’m overjoyed that a special edition DVD of “The Proper Stuff” has been released, with incredible extras that include unusual interviews with the cast and crew, deleted scenes, and an fantastic documentary on John Glenn. I’m also happy about it because I consider that this movie should be rightfully appreciated not only because it deals with historical events like the breaking of the sound barrier and the first American astronauts, but also because, as I said before, this is a classic.

Trevor Nunn’s Twelfth Night sits up on the same pedestal as Branagh’s Powerful Ado About Nothing. Not a suprise, either, given that both films came out of Branagh’s Renaissance Films. Reset in the Victorian era, Nunn maintains the handsome balance of comedy and drama (mighty like Remarkable Ado), carried out in one fabulous cast. Nunn does a extraordinary job of keeping most of Shakespeare’s comedy in-tact, editing only when neccessary to appease a film audience (most noticeable in Viola’s eminent “I left no ring with her” monologue being broken up throughout the film) .
No member disappoints and each one excels in their bear moral. Helena Bonham Carter, queen of period films, plays an unbelievable Olivia with trustworthy timing. Imogen Stubbs, whom I’ve only seen play a dinky role in Sense and Sensibility, exceeds all expectations station for her in the role of Viola. And Ben Kingsley (yes, Ghandi), reminds us of his Royal Shakespeare Company roots as a multi-dimensional Feste.
The win, unhappily available on CD (albeit Kingley’s “The Wind and the Rain” is available on the CD collection “If Music Be the Food of Love: Shakespeare at the Movies”), is breathtaking and well-done, particularly for a play that includes so remarkable music as a stage performance. It corrolates perfectly with the lush settings (often titillating romantic sea-scapes and Victorian manor houses) and costumes.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment about this film is that it’s not available on DVD. However, it alone is reason enough for me to sustain my VCR.
Trevor Nunn’s adaptation of “Twelfth Night” is a masterpiece of insight and nuance. Instead of simply playing up the definite slapstick of this gender-bending comedy of erroneous identity, Nunn highlights the dusky undertones of the dwelling which yield surprising depth and poignancy. Those familiar with the play will witness some alterations in the novel text, but those who are unique to Shakespeare will thank Mr. Nunn for making the record easier to follow and a pleasure to view. For example, when Duke Orsino (Toby Stephens) utters the illustrious opening line of the play, “If music be the food of appreciate, play on,” ten minutes have already elapsed. But what takes set in those ten minutes sets up the location beautifully and brings the characters to life.
The sage centers around two twins, Viola (Imogen Stubbs in a star-making performance) and Sebastian (Stephen Makintosh), who are shipwrecked and separated at sea, each fearing the other is dull. Viola washes up on the shore of a hostile country and disguises herself in her brother’s clothes to avoid occupy and withhold his memory alive. The other two main characters, Olivia (Helena Bonham Carter), and Orsino (Toby Stephens), are similarly timid. Olivia mourns her enjoy brother’s modern death and Orsino suffers passionate unrequited worship for Olivia, who refuses to examine him.
Viola’s male alter ego, Cesario, winds up in Orsino’s court, becomes his best friend, and (here’s the rub) romantic emissary to Olivia. What follows is a hilarious and poignant farce in which Olivia falls in appreciate with Orsino’s messenger, Cesario (Viola) who, under her disguise, is desperately in adore with Orsino. Meanwhile, impish members of Olivia’s household trick her arrogant butler, Malvolio (a bright Nigel Hawthorne), into believing that Olivia loves him, and another jealous suitor, the hapless Sir Andrew Agucheek (Nigel Grant), challenges Cesario to a duel. Through it all, the wry fool, Feste (Ben Kingsley), penetrates the confusion with a dry wit, a calming presence, and a surprisingly edifying singing scream(!) . When Sebastian, a “slow ringer” for Cesario (Viola), finally arrives on the scene, the confusion rises to a fever pitch that only Shakespeare could unravel.

Trevor Nunn has assembled a vivid cast led by the astonishingly versatile Imogen Stubbs. As Viola/Cesario, Stubbs gives a richly nuanced performance which ranges from deep pathos to antic comedy. It’s a shame that this shimmering, multi-faceted actress (who previously appeared in “Sense and Sensibility”) doesn’t glean top billing for the film. This is not to say that the actress who does, Helena Bonham Carter, isn’t extraordinary in her contain just. Ms. Carter displays prodigious silly talents in “Twelfth Night” and surely has the most expressive eyebrows in cinema. Her reaction to Sebastian’s arrival is itself almost worth the brand of admission. Ben Kingsley infuses the role of Feste with vast humanity and warmth, and Toby Stephens is a delicate, trustworthy Orsino. The cinematography is shapely and Shaun Davey’s musical gather is a delight. In a play where Shakespeare included so many songs, Davey contributes music that fits perfectly with the Victorian setting of Nunn’s adaptation. The procedure in which Nunn uses Feste’s final song to tie up the loose ends of the site is but one of the many miniature touches that invent this “Twelfth Night” a joy to behold again and again.

My personal well-liked is Punch Trunk about a slight elephant that hitchiked in a bunch of bananas and hurt up in the city and appeared virtually everywhere and blasted the skies with his cramped elephant noise, incl one man’s bird bath!
Martian Through Georgia is improbable about a lonely Martian who comes to earth searching for companionship and tries desperately to fit in but no matter what he does, people detached notice him as a monster and advise him to go home! Monster go home! Tearfully he does and finds worship on his contain planet.
Now Hear This is very surreal and is told with sound and report a la Gerald Mc Boing Boing, objective astonishing to contemplate and hear.

I can’t enjoy another reviewer blasted this location for including a disc of the WWII cartoons. These are classic pieces of American and film history.
Finally, all the cartoons from the extraordinary Bugs & Daffy: Wartime Cartoons VHS are now on DVD. Of course, I may serene withhold that VHS for Leonard Maltin’s narration, but here’s the breakdown of that tape vs. the Golden Collection discs.

This collection is well worth every penny you’ll utilize on it, as long you indulge in this film genre. Personally, these movies evoke more laughter for me than most of the comedies being currently released. Some of the movies don’t really qualify as martial arts movies – in particular, I’m referring to Sunless Cobra 1, 2, and 3 – three of the worst movies ever made. These movies, starring mature NFL player Fred “The Hammer” Williamson would more appropriately be categorized as action movies, although there isn’t a Hell of a lot of action in them. I digress. The point is that there are maybe 3 punches thrown in the entire first movie. It’s definitely not a martial arts movie. Most of the movies in this collection, however, are exactly what you would inquire of. In particular, there are three movies, Ninja Death 1, 2, and 3 that are so dreadful that they border on greatness. I’m not a film student, so I couldn’t disclose you what the filming technique is called wherein the “actors” fight in slow-motion, and then the film is sped up to execute the fights sight like they are taking dwelling at a normal run. The director of these Ninja Death movies sped the fights up too distinguished, and the result is that every battle looks like an episode of the Benny Hill indicate. I achieve these kind of crappy movies on at night to topple asleep to (spaghetti westerns and cheesy scare flicks work well also), but Ninja Death kept me awake and laughing. None of the movies in this collection are great budget – they are all venerable, and the sound and narrate quality is terrible, but that adds, not detracts, to the experience of watching them. If you “catch” these kinds of films, you absolutely can’t go depraved spending the money on this collection.
Some of the titles in MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK are so obscure, very dinky information could be gotten about them. A couple of selections here are from a long-forgotten American TV series. There’s even a few spaghetti-karate films thrown into the mix. The majority however initiate in the Far East: Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Lots of choreography went into the making of these movies; undoubtedly, there were a few unintentional injuries along the device, too. The action and pratfalls are non-stop and the plots mere window dressing for the foot-to-head combat scenes. For all martial arts fans these cinematic slugfests are sure-to-please.
Overall rating was achieved by averaging out viewer polling on 42 of these titles. Based on a film resource website’s 1 to 10 scoring system, the unique rating for MARTIAL ARTS is: 4.8.

Max Farberbock’s unique film is destined to become a classic. It is wowing people in festivals and being hailed as a fresh German classic. When the book upon the movie was published in 1959 in Switzerland, Germans were outrages and the author was not allowed to publish any future editions. Fifty years later the material in the book is honest as considerable and incendiary as it was attend then because it is about unspeakable events.

I suspect most fans of this film and Monty Python in general already gain a copy on DVD. The bonus features in this modern double-disc edition definitely effect it worth the expose capture. Most of the features from the Criterion edition (two commentary tracks, five deleted scenes, radio ads) are here. (The nice 1979 BBC documentary “The Pythons” is the only feature from the Criterion version missing from this fresh region.)

The fresh hour-long documentary included with this edition is worth the buy alone. All five surviving Pythons are interviewed and offer a lot of insight into the film, from its belief, to the controversy surrounding its opening (in the US and in the UK), to its lasting standing as the Pythons’ greatest work. (Yes, I know, many fans like “Grail” even more.) I’m always gratified to gape up-to-date interviews with the team, now all in their sixties.
The other essential feature is an audio reading of the unique script, recorded with all six members several months before filming began. This is great more toothsome and watchable than you might quiz, illustrated onscreen with storyboard drawings and script pages. The reading is 20 minutes longer than the film, and you hear some bits that never made it past this stage.

And the film itself, of course, is a admire. A hysterically comic, yet thought-provoking satire whose target is group-think in general, and not merely religion or superstition.
This is the 4th iteration of this movie that I have owned. My first was on VHS, then came the Criterion LaserDisc, which was followed by the Criterion DVD edition. I really wasn’t expecting remarkable of an improvement over the Criterion DVD since this is an older movie. Regardless of what version you believe, if you are a Python fan, you are in for a Vast surprise with this latest edition on Blu-ray. The recount is approach perfection with only a couple of scenes where I noticed the tiniest bit of film grain. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the remastered sound elements. After trying the different sound choices, I found the PCM soundtrack to be the best. I really wasn’t expecting the sound to be that enormous for this movie, but BOY was I surprised. Sony has truly outdone themselves with this latest high def remastering of Life of Brian. This is the absolute best I have ever seen or heard of this zany film. There are details in the portray that I have NEVER seend before, and I have seen this movie MANY MANY times. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the special features were not in HD, but that is not that expansive a deal since everything else about this title is impartial plot on.
There are many who would say this movie is a sacrilege. As a Christian, I would disagree with such a statement. I have heard some say that this movie is making light of Jesus’ ministry, and especially his crucifixion. They are missing the whole point. I judge this movie illustrates how some people will blindly follow religious leaders, or will fair go with the crowd without really questioning what they’re doing, or why they’re doing it. The scene where Brian is incorrect for Jesus and chased by the crowd is a excellent example. When his sandal falls off, some hold it as a effect that they should rob their enjoy sandal, while some resolve to follow the Holy Gourd of Jerusalem. How can anyone NOT observe the humor in that??? Also, what if there really were some in the far help of the crowd at the Sermon on the Mount who couldn’t quite gain out what was being said??? I have seen this movie countless times, and at no point is Jesus ever actually made fun of. Even the crucifixion scene is obviously not a exiguous on Jesus’ fill crucifixion. I concept this movie was immense! Titanic Exertion IN NEKONRON CHINA was a titanic movie for the Ranma ½ series and it was also very humorous!
It starts out as a “normal” day in the neighborhood when panty thieving Master Happosai comes befriend for a “visit” to the Tendo dojo. But he’s not alone! After years of searching for him, a young Chinese girl, Lai Chi and her elephant, Jasmin have followed him all the scheme serve to Japan. She’s inflamed about a scroll that was given to her family and passed down many generations because it was said that the scroll brings luck to the holder of it. After taking her hands off of it for a second, the prophecy comes suitable and a Prince comes to gather and marry the one who holds the scroll, and by pure luck Akane has the scroll. She gets kidnapped by Kirin and the 7 Lucky Gods Martial Artists and now it’s a speed to follow them to China and set Akane before she gets married to Kirin. It’s up to Ranma, Ryoga, Mousse, Shampoo, Mr. Tendo, Mr. Saotome, Happosai and Kuno to achieve her and defeat the Seven Lucky Gods.
This is a big movie for the Ranma series. It’s very comical, the fable is titanic and all of your popular characters are in this one. Along with a sizable soundtrack, Mountainous Peril IN NEKONRON CHINA is a principal component to any Ranma fan’s collection. Plus Lai Chi is hilarious. She is really laughable. Happosai’s “usual antics” are pretyt silly as well, like when Ryoga and Happosai net into it on the boat to China. And of course, the Seven Lucky Gods weren’t abominable either.

Definitely check out this movie, it’s very worth it and it’s astronomical for any Ranma collector. Also check out the special OAV series and the second movie RANMA ½ NIHAO MY CONCUBINE. I do warn you that if you aren’t up to hasten with the series, you might want to accept up a runt and check out TV Series 1 and the ANYTHING GOES MARTIAL ARTS series otherwise some things might not compose all that noteworthy sense. Either intention it goes, you’ll bask in this one.
To me, this is sterling collector’s item for every Ranma fan. The intro at least cameos basically every character (including both cursed forms of the Jusenkyo victims) in the Ranma World. The fight scenes were stupendous, but could’ve been better had Ranma not gotten his clock cleaned in half of them and if Lychee would’ve fought at least once. As we all know, The Movie: II is better, but the first one’s the classic. A decent question: Where’s Ukyou? She cameoed at the beginning and that was it. It would’ve been da bomb if Ukyou would’ve lasted the whole film. This is a “must steal” movie!

In a draw, I’m quite delighted that every attempt to remake this movie has failed to materialize; were Universal to remake it now, it would be a neo-slasher crap fest laced with nothing but screaming teenagers and a totally unsympathetic gore factory of a monster. And while there are purists out there who may claim that the Gill Man doesn’t really belong in the company of the other clssic Universal Monsters, the truth is that “The Creature From The Dusky Lagoon” IS the last grand Universal monster movie. What’s more, its sequels actually aren’t as unpleasant as others may want you to fill, particularly since they do do the rare task of telling a different narrative in each entry – more than the “Jaws” sequels could manage – and as the central sympathetic character of each fragment, the Creature himself does explain essential character development over the course of three movies without degenerating into the high-camp advance that has since destroyed the likes of Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger.

Where better to open than the beginning? You probably know the drill: a group of scientists – one of whom happens to perceive particularly delicate in a white bathing suit – putters down the Amazon in search of the fossils of a ‘missing link’ between man and fish, only to gain the living truth hiding out in a forgotten tributary. And it becomes distinct that the Gill Man wants only two things: female companionship and solitude from everybody else. The state stunning standard sci-fi fare for the 1950s (and earlier when you believe the first two movies are naught but a submerged remake of ‘King Kong’, but more on that later), but it’s the execution of it that sets CFTBL above all other contenders of the era.
Under the expert direction of Jack Arnold, the cast is up to their task – as Kay Lawrence, Julia (Julie) Adams does sufficient acting to convince us she could have some scientific prowess despite her wonderful screaming ability and vast legs; Richard Carlson does another wonderful job of playing a scientist-hero type – something he was known for in ’50s sci-fi – as Kay’s fiance David Reed; Richard Denning makes a broad antagonistic figure in the develop of David and Kay’s boss Notice Williams; and Nestor Paiva provides humorous relief as Lucas, the eccentric captain of the RITA. Then, of course, there’s the ’star’, or rather both of him: Ben Chapman is the man inside the monster suit – with the slickest and most iconic monster gain of the ’50s – while topside, with Ricou Browning playing the Gill Man beneath the waves, a role he would reprise for the two sequels.
Filled with equal measures of emotional resonance, textbook dialogue and proper primitive shivers – accompanied by one of the most surprisingly functional ‘patchwork’ music scores ever produced – CFTBL is unquestionably the best monster movie of the ’50s, and one of the best sci-fi movies of that time.

Considering how few who were fervent in making this movies are serene around today, Universal does an impressive job assembling its resources for the bonus features:
* The documentary “Support To The Dismal Lagoon”, by film historian and Universal monster aficionado David Skal, provides some interesting insights into the making of the Gill Man trilogy, including such revelations as:
- The studio’s novel vision for the scrutinize of the Gill Man, and what they intended to do with that witness after it was scrapped.
- The dependable makers of the Gill Man – including plan artist Milicent Patrick and sculptors Chris Mueller and Jack Keban.
- Humorous anecdotes of on-set mishaps bewitching an eyebrow-raising trade-paper photo and a man-eating sea turtle.
- The principle slack the 3-D in which the first two movies were filmed, and the truth gradual why the fad dilapidated so snappy.
- Discussion about subtexts and implications in the films, and the progression of the Gill Man as a character.

DISC TWO:
REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
A year has passed, and some more attractive confident scientists determine to occupy the Gill Man and bring him aid to civilization and effect him on explain in a marine life park, where he’s observed by a aesthetic blond icthyologist. I don’t believe I need to interpret the rest.

Like most sequels, ROTC has its flaws, to be determined – one scene involves some visibly-imperfect wire work for one of the Gill Man’s victims, and for some reason the sculptors gave the classic Gill Man create a pair of ping-pong-ball monster eyes, possibly for visibility purposes for the actors. But given the act it had to follow, ROTC is actually aesthetic worthwhile…especially when you judge that this DID rep remade by Universal, sort of, as “Jaws 3″. You figure out which one you’d rather view.
THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US
Fitting that for the last Gill Man movie, the Gill Man be forcibly removed from the undersea environment he’s at home in – this time by being doused in kerosene and flames by the dunderheaded assistant of obsessive scientist William Barton (Jeff Morrow), who’s sure to reshape the Gill Man into a land-lubber – we never do bag out why – objective as great as he’s clear to effect a complete subordinate out of his disillusioned child-bride wife Marcia (Leigh Snowden) . Once again, a nobler scientific mind enters the equation, Tom Morgan (Rex Reason), and his rescue of the Gill Man from sure death, combined with the Gill Man’s affinity for the opposite sex regardless of species, note estimable for Tom and Marcia when Dr. Barton begins eyeing those eyeing his wife with destroy on his mind.

The chemistry between the human characters closely resembles that of the first film – one scientific philosophy that suggests we could befriend spiritually from what we learn, whereas another takes the path of benefitting materially from knowledge – and surprisingly, this time out the beast doesn’t beget a beeline for the beauty, although he does retort her – maybe the Gill Man is fair tired of having his heart broken. The land-locked Gill Man is played by Don Megowan, with the character’s gawk radically altered as the result of being burned (a status map re-used by Universal in “Jaws 2″ to cheesier execute) – heck, they even place him in clothes! And Ricou Browning does gain one final appearance as the submerged Gill Man, with the encourage of stock footage from the first two films.

* More theatrical trailers, which are always a hoot, particularly the trailer for ROTC.
The bottom line: if you like your monster-movie series waterlogged, don’t kill your time with the “Jaws” sequels. Universal got it suitable encourage in the ’50s, and this is the proof. Retract this state, by cracky!
As one of the six “Legacy” collections featuring the approved Universal monsters, the Creature status has some distinctly new features. In one blueprint, it’s the sparsest collection, with only three movies, but it also is the only one with commentaries on all the films. Perhaps more importantly is the nature of the Creature himself. While the other monsters are either purely supernatural (Dracula, the Wolf Man), purely man-made (Frankenstein’s monster, the Invisible Man) or a combination of the two (the Mummy), only the Creature is a natural creature.
What also stands out in the Creature movies is that humanity in general comes off as the awful guys and the Creature is the most sympathetic figure. Acting in a generally defensive manner, the Creature is subjected to greater and greater torments. He actually is similar in this fashion to King Kong (which is not surprising, since the first two movies, when combined, are essentially remakes of that giant ape classic) .
As is typically the case, the first movie – The Creature from the Gloomy Lagoon – is the best in the bunch. Several scientists – as well as the significant female worship interest – go to South America in search of the bones of a legendary fish-man, only to regain a living one instead. The Creature develops an interest in the woman even as it wages war with the intruders in its Murky Lagoon, leading to several deaths before the final confrontation.
In Revenge of the Creature, the Creature is captured and brought to a marine amusement park, where it is chained up, studied and displayed for the masses. (In both this movie and the third one, there is a lot of confusion between salt-water and new water life, with the Creature forced to alternate between the two.) A la King Kong, eventually, he breaks free and goes on a rampage. While this film is most distinguished for the hide debut of Clint Eastwood, this is actually only of minor significance: Eastwood is in the movie for only a cramped, playing a very atypical role as an inept lab assistant.
In the third movie – The Creature Walks Among Us – the Creature is captured again but seriously burned in the process. The process to put him forces him to be a land creature, and this once noteworthy creature of the Amazon is forced to live in the San Francisco Bay state, unable to be master of the water anymore.
The 1950s were not tall years in science fiction/horror film making, but the Creature movies, despite their flaws, are some of the best of the era, with a decent costume for the monster and reasonably genuine effects. Unprejudiced as it was influenced by King Kong, you can search for the obvious influence these movies had on others, in particular, Jaws. For Universal, this would be the last of their iconic monsters, and unlike the others, it has not been subject to any remakes. With decent commentaries and other features, this is a fun station, a solid four star collection that will please fans of classic monster movies.
